Symptoms: idler tire
1.) no REWIND or unreliable REWIND.
2.) may eat tapes.
3.) tape is comming off supply reel OK but a tape loop is forming after
the capstan and not getting put on takeup reel.
4.) takeup reel may not be moving at all or moving erratically.
5.) shuts off after pressing PLAY.
6.) may eat tapes after pressing STOP. When going from PLAY to STOP mode,
VCR may be unable to put tape back into the cassette.
7.) may play entire tape, but if you press PAUSE or STOP, it may shut off
when you try to go back to PLAY mode.
8.) if you have a dummie cartridge, put the VCR in PLAY mode and check
the traction between the idler tire and takeup reel table. You may find
that the idler slips against the takeup reel table (grab the takeup reel
table with your hand).
The Cure - replace idler tire. It may be easier if the cassette
carriage is removed first. Caution - be careful not to stretch spring that holds idler to drive shaft. Difficulty
rating 6 - moderate.
Symptom: VCR repeatedly and quickly destroys the idler tire. Idler tire seldom lasts more than a few weeks. This is caused by a spring on the idler assembly that tightens and quickly fatiques the rubber.
The Cure - replace entire idler assembly. Difficulty rating 6 - moderate.
Symptoms: capstan belt.
1.) VCR shuts down.
2.) capstan shaft is not turning.
3.) VCR plays slow sometimes, capstan belt is slipping (rare symptom).
Check capstan belt.
The Cure - replace capstan belt. Difficulty rating 2 - easy. It may be a long job to tear down to the capstan belt, but it's all easy work.
Symptom: VCR squeaks. Make a mark on the top of the capstan shaft that can be easily seen. Play your favorite cassette. Watch the mark to see if the squeak coincides with the rotation of the capstan shaft. Pull the bracket off the bottom of the capstan flywheel and check the center where the capstan makes contact with it and see if the lubricant is dry.
The Cure - clean and relube the center of the bracket. Difficulty rating 2 - easy.
Symptom: low tape tension - around 25 gram/centimeters. Tape tension band is tinted brown (requires a tape tension gauge to measure this).
The Cure - replace tape tension band. Be sure to clean the takeup reel table and use a gauge to properly set the tape tension to 50 gram/centimeters. Difficulty rating 4 - moderate.

This VCR uses an idler with a single tire that has it's own motor. This idler is used for all transport modes. It has seperate motors for cassette load and the Moving Mechanism; the Moving Mechanism motor is on the bottom of the deck and the cassette load motor is on the top right end of the carriage. A front load type cassette carriage is used. The mode switch is a linear type and is located underneath the deck.
Tape End Sensers - no special precautions necessary with top cover off. Keep direct sunlight off VCR and don't use extremely bright light over bench to avoid false trips of tape end sensors.

ALWAYS REMOVE A.C. POWER BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO REMOVE CASSETTE. This section only instructs how to remove the cassette for this model number without further damaging the tape or the VCR. For solutions to the no-eject problem, check this page and the Online Service Manual. |
Removing the cassette can be easily accomplished by a procedure called Hand Cycling. If there is tape outside the cassette, we need to put it back inside. Locate the Moving Mechanism Motor underneath the deck. Rotate the motor shaft while watching the roller guides. The roller guides may not start moving right away but as long as the master cam gear is rotating you will eventually get there. Keep turning the shaft until the guides are fully retracted.
Now we can reel in the tape. From the bottom side of the deck, you can get a finger or small tool on the reel tables. Simply rotate until the tape is back inside.
Finally, you can eject the cassette by hand cycling the carriage drive motor. It is located on the right end of the carriage. Different carriages were used. Keep rotating the shaft until the cassette completely out.
For further information see Cassette Won't Eject.
